How do Solar Panels Work?
Solar panel systems, also known as solar photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun's energy using photovoltaic cells. These cells don't need direct sunlight to work – they can still generate some electricity on a cloudy day. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting.
Benefits of solar
- Reduce Your Energy Bills
Once you have paid for the initial solar panel installation solar energy is essentially free, reducing significantly or eliminating monthly bills. Excess energy generated can be sold back to the grid, further offsetting costs. - Improve Your Carbon Footprint
Solar energy is a clean and green source of power. It produces no greenhouse gas emissions or air pollutants during operation, helping to combat climate change and improve air quality. - Protection from future price hikes
Solar panels provide a decentralised energy solution, allowing individuals and businesses to generate their own electricity. Increased demand on the National Grid is likely to lead to price hikes, with solar panels you will have energy independence.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How many panels do I need?
This all depends on your energy requirements, how big your property is and the size of your roof. Our solar installers will carry out a site survey where we will ask to see your energy bills to calculate the size of system required. - Planning permission and building control
Solar panels are designated as a permitted development meaning that planning permission is not necessary. There are however some exceptions:
Your home is a listed building - Your house is situated within a conservation area
It is still possible to receive permission, but this is at the discretion of your local planning authority.
Installations must pass building regulations; this will include structural and electrical safety of the building. As your installer we will notify building control on your behalf to enable us to proceed with the install.
